January
January 2006 began Staff Development meetings and School Assemblies LAUSD Festival of Shakespeare (This is the Arts Community Parnership Network Colony Project). These Staff development meetings are actually performances by three S@P members designed to remind teachers of tools that they already have and to refresh the whole subject of performing arts, Shakespeare and the life and times of the Renaissance. January 10th was the Staff Development Workshop with teachers at Annandale School and January 24th was the Staff Development Workshop with teachers at Lankershim School. The feedback for our three teacher/performers, Jane Longenecker, Steve Peterson and James Schendel has been fabulous! This is definitely a program that is valuable and will be continued--whether part of or separate from the Festival of Shakespeare. Our first in-school Student Workshops January 24th & 30th continued the themes provided in the teacher workshops as Archie Lee Simpson and Derek Medina joined the crew for sword-fighting and instruction to students in grades from Kindergarten to Fifth! Kudos to all of our teacher/performers!

15 February 15th was the first ACPN LAUSD Colony Project performance date for Annandale School and it went wonderfully well! As the head servant from the house of Lord Burghley, Miles Trimble, (Michael Cabler) greeted the students at the door, he explained that Shakespeare’s players were showing the new play, Romeo and Juliet to the nobles Lord Burghley (Jeffrey Schoenberg), Lady Mary Dudley né Howard, Baroness Dudley (Tally Briggs) and her sister Mistress Catherine Howard (Lisa Bingham) in hopes that Shakespeare’s company of players might play before the queen. The kids then had their biscuits (cookies) and cider, talked with the Ladies and Lord Burghley and then were treated to our wonderful R & J. After the performance, Lord Burghley presented Shakespeare with an official charter to perform for the Queen! In the student question and answer period, one student asked the nobles why they didn’t have a part in the play, and they answered that, although these actors were very good actors, they were nobles and definitely did not ACT. One of the best questions was, “When you kiss someone, does it hurt?” and Bill Mendieta quickly and appropriately replied, “No, when you get a little older, you kind of like it!” We can’t wait to hear from them!
21 February 21st was the ACPN LAUSD Professional Development for Lillian Elementary and the 24th was Lankershim School Student Workshops for tracks C & D. Jane Longenecker reported that children from their last workshop came to visit them after the 21st workshop. They are eagerly looking forward to their Colony date, which is April 5th. Jane came away with a huge envelope of letters from the students for which we all give them a huge THANK YOU!

March 6th & 7th - Julius Caesar was performed at Burbank High School as the Ides of March Approached! We were very happy to stage the show at the theater this year – previous presentations were held in the library, and it was commented repeatedly that these Julius Caesar shows were the best in our history! This performance is supported in part by The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission

Burbank on Parade! Burbank on Parade was full of chills, thrills and spills! Joel Surratt pulled the beautiful flower-covered carriage with seven-month pregnant Tabitha Davis, and children Brodey Davis(3) and Shannon Lamb(5). Tally Briggs and Kelie McIver re-enacted Shrew while Gary Lamb played Brutus speaking to the crowd. Audience reaction was heart-warming, with MANY a standing ovation and cries of “Shakespeare! Shakespeare!” S@P will soon be on Channel 6 Burbank as a part of their program covering this wonderful community event! Other participants included Louis Roth, Archie Simpson and Mario Perez, who demonstrated theatrical swordplay, our own Shakespeare, James Schendel, Tony and William Potter, Bill Mendieta, Debbie Gates and Carol Jones. It was also the debut of our new Shakespeare at Play Banner! Everyone who participated had an absolutely wonderful time and we all met at Tallyrand afterwards for fun and food! Next year we ALL must come and march and have fun!

This is a FABULOUS venue with views of the ocean that you will not believe!
This performance, it was remarked by resident director, Tony Potter, is reminiscent of performances by the King’s Men in Shakespeare’s day, when players often performed for the nobility at their castles or lodges. The difference here, he noted, is that tickets can be purchased for this performance(including dinner), and anyone can be treated like royalty!
